Nihonbashi

The area of Nihonbashi is named after the bridge of the same name. Nihonbashi means Bridge of Japan, and during the reign of the Tokugawa Shoguns (1603 - 1868) all distances were measured from here similar to how the Romans measured distances from Rome. Today's bridge is a modern structure very different to the original wooden one but I do like the lights.
These days a express way runs above the river that the bridge crosses.

  1. Nice to see a more traditional touch on the modern bridge. I guess the old stuff often has to give way to more modern, practical infrastructure.
